As we turned left from Central Ave SE to University Ave SE, I regarded the police car now comfortably in place in the rear view mirror and wondered aloud: if I started speeding when it was five below and even colder than that when the wind chill was taken into account, would they actually pull me over and get out of the warmth of the black and white car? Being older and wiser then when I first dreamt up ways of challenging authority like this, I decided against testing the theory. To reward me karma divined the foot of the driver of the yellow cab in the lane to the let of me to floor it, and it inexplicably started speeding away... long enough for the cop to switch lanes, speed up and follow THEM, and by the time the hack figured out perhaps their own left turn should immediately be considered as a form of escape, the red and blue flashers had come on and they BOTH made a turn onto 16th Street SE and right to the curb. The civic duty and/or desire to brandish and exploit the power of their badge and office shown by the cop was noted by both the driver AND passenger of the slightly-differently-from-a-cab-yellow coloured Beetle as we picked up speed out of Dinkytown and on our way home.
