| Please give me a minute to talk about myself regarding reports of Ultimate Warrior's death.
Some of you have heard this before, but it was my great friend Joe who got me hooked for good on WWF back in 1991 when I went over to his family's house in Modesto to watch SummerSlam's double main event: the match made in heaven (the Randy Savage/Miss Elizabeth “weddingâ€) and the match made in hell (Hulk Hogan & The Ultimate Warrior vs. Sergeant Slaughter, Colonel Mustafa and General Adnan with Sid Justice as special guest referee). Ultimate Warrior was, far and away, Joe's favourite performer. Joe once took a break from a family vacation to Lake Havasu City to travel to Warrior's gym - and I'm PRETTY sure that other than being in the same state, they weren't even that close. I still have an autographed photo of Warrior lifting weights somewhere thanks to that trip.
Anyway, it wasn't a long trip from SummerSlam '91 to me never missing a weekend show, my first Prime Time Wrestling reports for rec.sport.pro-wrestling, two years of RAW reports for r.s.p-w, four years of development of the Internet, four years of recaps for WrestleManiacs, WrestleLine, Online Onslaught (and, oh by the way, [slash] wrestling), twelve years of The W, meeting and marrying a fellow wrestling fan, so … better or worse, in no small part, the persona of the Ultimate Warrior led to Joe unwittingly playing a pivotal role in the prototypical moments leading to the persona of CRZ.
Last night, Warrior gave a speech in a hilarious trenchcoat and ill-fitting plastic mask representation of his trademark (and/or copyright) face paint - watching on the east coast feed, I knew that I needed to send my friend a heads up to check the west coast feed. Unfortunately, it's tax season and he's a little busy, so he did NOT get to see the show. And now I've had to send another text letting him know WWE has reported that not 26 hours after we last saw him, he's no longer with us.
Deaths are never timely, but sometimes they can be less untimely than others. We'll see if this works out to be one of those cases, but for now all I can be is shocked. |
