12.8.13 22:08 | 85 DAYS TO ELECTION DAY: Ten (!) more filings today, including all of the remaining "top tier" candidates. So that's...32? Hoo boy. If you were worried we weren't going to have Captain Jack Sparrow in the race...you may fear no more. I'm currently in a hotel room in Lark Mary, FL for some Symantec meetings taking place this week. This involved flying out of MSP to Orlando by way of Charlotte. WHILE I was in Charlotte, I got a call from Elections informing me that I would be listed on the ballot as "Libertarian" (this was not a surprise) and if I wanted it to instead read "Libertarian Party," I would need to come down and amend my filing (this was a LITTLE more of a surprise). I told them I would be nowhere near Minneapolis until after the deadline (tomorrow) and not to anticipate seeing me. Then, I thought about this. Why exactly would this be something I want to change? For the mayoral election, everyone has to declare "party or principle" and you get three words to do so. (I think three words was arbitrarily selected back in the day so that one could put "Democratic-Farmer-Labor," but I readily admit I haven't put a whole lot of research into that.) I put "Libertarian" because that's my party, although, yeah, it's a principle as well - well, I would have had to put an "-ism" at the end of it, right? ANYWAY...obviously, the DFL guys can't put "Party" at the end of theirs as they've used up their three words - I'm not even sure anybody's running as a declared Republican but I can't see THEM using "Party" either. So why would I? Well, I checked the other guy running, and sure enough, he DID declare "Libertarian Party" ...so that's probably driving somebody over in Elections nuts that there's two slightly different listings on their ballot. (On the other hand, I hope the guy who put "Democrat" is amending HIS filing to "Democratic" because that drives DEMOCRATS nuts. Just ask them!) (Oh, and there's also the "do we hyphenate or not" contingent - yes, you do, but I digress...even more than I already have, I mean.) SO. It didn't end there! After landing in Florida and while I was driving from the Orlando airport to my hotel, I received a SECOND call from Elections, telling me how I could still get my notarized affidavit amending my filing to the office in time, blah blah blah, and I told them that after thinking about it I was just fine with it the way I'd done it two weeks ago. It's kinda funny how much government interaction they've fed this libertarian today. ;-) This time tomorrow we'll know exactly what we're up against as the final day of filing closes and we see just how many folks have been cajoled into running (and they ARE being cajoled...I'll talk more about THAT in the weeks to come as well). |
