28.8.13 11:37 | 69 DAYS TO ELECTION DAY - MAYORAL CANDIDATE #4: OLE SAVIOR (REPUBLICAN) Oloveuse Scorpio Savior, 63, is a bit of a legend - over the last decades, he's run for practically everything up to and including US President, and apparently, on separate occasions, for both the Democratic and Republican parties. In the 2010 gubernatorial election, after failing in both primaries, he ran as an independent write-in candidate, where the Secretary of State's office reported that he received a total of one vote from Olmsted county....which is weird, because I kinda thought Ole lived in Hennepin county all this time (and perhaps all his life - the Internet says he was born in Minneapolis). He's definitely living in Minneapolis at the time of filing, listing an address in Ventura Village (Phillips) on his filing. Savior had to amend that filing, as his original entry under "website" was a hotmail.com email address. Somebody from Elections probably called him to get that fixed and his website as now listed is definitely a website - looks like a Google Site someone else is administering on his behalf - and, not to criticize, but that photo of the Spoonbridge and Cherry looks WAY off, aspect ratio-wise. The main takeaway from his website is that it looks like he's still running for President despite slapping a big red "Republican Party Candidate for Minneapolis Mayor 2013" on it...unless Minneapolis has some nuclear weapons of which I am not aware. Also, clicking on his "issues" page takes you to a campaign page with "governor" in its URL which appears to have been written in 2009. In fact, its "Google Sites" name is still "olesaviorforgovernor!" While you're visiting the site, be sure NOT to miss his excellent series of collages from his Presidential Campaign (like I said, it gets confusing at times to determine for which office Savior is running at any given time) at https://sites.google.com/site/olesaviorforgovernor/2012-ole-savior-artwork and now we understand why he self-identifies as an artist/poet...although I failed to find his book of Poetry, "World of Everlasting Dreams," for sale anywhere on the Internet. Ole has run for office so many times that people in the know now make "Has Ole Savior filed yet?" jokes - and are then surprised to find out that, yes, he has filed. By the way, he's *already* a declared candidate against Mark Dayton for the 2014 Gubernatorial race, having informed the Secretary of State of his particular fundraising apparatus (which may explain why he's currently a Republican). As he appears to already be looking beyond the local election, I think I have to wonder aloud if perhaps he's not taking his run for mayor as seriously as I'm taking mine! Amazingly, he is the only candidate of The Thirty-five to declare himself a Republican - which may just get him more votes than otherwise he'd normally get. I honestly can't tell you if I'd be a better mayor than this guy or not, but I have a strong feeling that I might be! Am I right or wrong? It's YOUR vote! NEXT TIME: Not much...but I'll try to come up with a good conspiracy theory
27.8.13 23:01 | 10 WEEKS TO ELECTION DAY - MAYORAL CANDIDATE #3: DAN COHEN (JOBS DOWNTOWN CASINO) He's got 100 more likes than I do over at his Facebook page (linked below). Cohen's big idea, as represented by his stated political prinicple: opening a casino downtown with the idea that its revenue would take care of most of Minneapolis' debt issues (although this can't really happen without amending Minnesota's constitution to ALLOW a casino downtown; Cohen believes this is something that can happen, but I believe it would take years and wouldn't be a slam dunk to happen) - also, his preferred site for this casino currently hosts the downtown post office. None of this seems to appear on his website. In the 1980s Cohen was a Republican; he's obviously downplayed that fact, noting that he's donated to lots of DFL folks locally...as if there were other folks to donate to! He has also said he wouldn't have run if the DFL had actually endorsed a candidate because it would have been pointless and self-identifies up front on his website as an Independent. This is Cohen's second run for mayor; in 1969, he lost to Charles Stenvig, 62%-38%. Dan was invited to the eight person "debate" at the State Fair, where he noted that he was the only candidate to actually cast a vote against the Vikings stadium deal (a Planning Commission vote to accept the stadium design plan passed 6-1 - he was the 1) since the City Council's 7-6 vote back in May 2012. In addition to serving on the Planning Commission, Cohen also serves on the Minneapolis City Charter Commission. Notable enemy: The Star-Tribune - Cohen won a lawsuit (Cohen v. Cowles Media) which went all the way to the Supreme Court involving the Star Tribune breaking an anonymity agreement where he had been the source. Cohen later authored a book (Anonymous Source: At War Against the Media; A True Story) dealing with the affair. I honestly can't tell you if I'd be a better mayor than this guy or not. ACTUALLY...I really like this guy and would love to see him as our mayor if I don't win! Am I right or wrong? It's YOUR vote! NEXT TIME: Oh boy! (https://www.facebook.com/DanCohenForMayor)

26.8.13 20:13 | Speaking of things I didn't share with you earlier, last Tuesday was the hearing for [Green Party mayoral candidate] Doug Mann's request for a writ of mandamus compelling our city council to place a measure on the ballot letting the people of Minneapolis have a say on "our" portion of any new Vikings stadium. I was up early to take the proceedings in in person and so were several other candidates - along with reporters from, I think, all of the TV stations. Here's a link to Allen Costantini's report for KARE. I sat next to the WCCO reporter (new lady I didn't know) in the galley. I didn't think Mann's argument was going to fly, but there are already other folks talking about other legal tactics to stymie stadium efforts - and with the recent action against the Wilfs, it's a little more popular to speak out against this deal than it was back when it was railroaded through the state's AND city's legislative bodies. Boy, it was a lot of old white hippies there, though. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't note that Captain Jack Sparrow really wanted me to have his card, but I gave him the brush-off.
26.8.13 20:05 | 71 DAYS TO ELECTION DAY: Sorry for my "hiatus" - my day job, the State Fair and some very special guests at the house kept me away from Facebook (photos on Flickr and the personal Facebook page)...and since Facebook is about 92% of my "campaign," staying away from Facebook isn't the best thing for me to do between now and November. It's way too hot to do anything BUT be on Facebook for the rest of my "vacation," so expect me to get back into more of a routine very soon! In the mean time, here's a story from Don Samuels' press conference on how the mayor can eliminate crime in the city. I already left a comment on their website, which I repeated rhetorically on Twitter - and he has already responded to me! So...he's at least got some savvy people watching Twitter for his name. (Link to Star Tribune story: "Samuels says city should focus on six crime families")
