10.9.13 21:34 | MAYORAL CANDIDATE #9: EDMUND BERNARD BRUYERE (LEGACY-NEXT GENERATION) Dr. Bruyere, Ph.D., or "Eddie," expects to surprise a lot of people by exploiting both his longtime Northside roots (although he now lives in the President Apartments in Whittier) as well as his ties to the Native American community; "[he] is a tribal member of the Sagkeeng First Nation located in Manitoba, Canada" - wait, what? Closer to home, he also claims to be "an Anishinabe First Nation tribal member of paternal decent" which is fuzzy on several levels...I think he used another spelling of "Anishinaabe" and wonder why he wouldn't just say "Ojibwe" which would be far more recognisable in Minnesota... but perhaps one is techically true and one is technically...less true (the Manitoba thing again? But the Ojibwe were in Manitoba...oh, I'm getting caught up in tangential research again). Finally, I think he meant "descent" and not "decent" - not to imply he's not a decent man. I'm a picky proofreader, I know, but you put his two selling points up to scrutiny and... He's also a veteran and I thank him for his service to our country. Oh, and he's ALSO a Bear. (No, not that kind of bear.) Go see the cover photo on his personal Facebook wall for proof. I can't suss out his age, but going by his enrollment info, I would guess he's my age give or take a couple years. I believe his father AND son are also named "Eddie" and wonder why he'd eschew the "Jr." - this is usually where I'd make a Vincent K. McMahon joke, but you're not here for that. (Or are you?) This appears to be his first campaign. Obviously, I'm all for a grassroots campaign, but how about real talk? He's one of the few candidates on Facebook who I'm doubling in Likes. There ARE people on the north side who have the Internet...I believe they may also vote! My original question was going to be "what's a guy so smart doing running for mayor?" but it appears he's currently a substitute teacher in Roseville. Nothing against teaching, but I bet being mayor is far preferable. He has an old resume online where he makes mention of being "director of The Sacred Beings Project," a nonprofit organization for Native American children (I think - every website they ever had are suffering from expired domains and/or having been taken down) His "Issues" pages has a lot of stuff the mayor can't affect and a lot of "youth" issues. Between this, his former(?) nonprofit, his current occupation...this guy loves the kids. His very first announcment also set the tone: "Running on a platform of family's and children's issues..." I'm not sure you'd find a candidate who'd go on the record as being AGAINST family and children's issues, but...I don't think it's really the top concern in the Minneapolis mayor's race. When she profiled him, Naomi speculated he'd be much better off running for school board. I think he's got about the same chance of winning either race. I honestly can't tell you if I'd be a better mayor than this guy or not, but I feel like I would! Am I right or wrong? It's YOUR vote! NEXT: Another "serial" candidate

10.9.13 20:32 | EIGHT WEEKS TO ELECTION DAY: You can't get covered if you aren't a major candidate, but you can't be a major candidate if you aren't covered. That there's Catch-22. Until we can get the notion out of our collective hive mind that money's the only standard on which candidates should be judged, we'll continue to be presented with the same old candidates. Here's my post over at e-demo describing my "invitation" to a League of Women Voters-sponsored forum.
