11.1.16 12:18 | | An unexpected side effect of today's news is the intellectual tickling I've gotten seeing everyone learn or relearn about the "Bowie Bonds" of 1997. I wish I could find the archival stories from the newspapers I was reading back then, but this'll do. (BBC News: 'Bowie bonds' - the singer's financial innovation) |

| Back in the day, this was one of the signon tunes for KTEH, the San Jose PBS station, back during the final days of TV stations still doing signon/signoff. It took me a long time to figure out what it was (no Shazam in the '90s), and I think I eventually had to send a few emails and end up on a local TV discussion group to get a list of ALL their signon songs, then try to find them all until I got the match. As for Channel 54, KTEH eventually went under thanks to the tech bubble bursting and a precipitious drop in pledges and funding; KQED ended up taking them over and absorbing them into their multiplex of digital channels. Of course, they were never the same. And, of course, a lot of US were ALSO never the same after the tech bubble burst. Happy Monday!

| This is a terrible shock - he just released an album, for crying out loud. Ian and I talked about him last Tuesday, Krista and I talked about him just Saturday. He wasn't "gone." Now he's gone. I wonder how sudden this was or if he was preparing for this time long ago knowing how close it might have been. I hate thinking about stuff like this, so I'm not going to think hard about picking a track. This is one I was talking about with friends not even 48 hours ago, again from the "AMP" era of my listening phase, and I loved how he could take something like electronica, or drum'n'bass, or jungle, or whatever term you prefer and incorporate it into something that was his. Kick ass video, too. I should probably take more time to come up with some better words, but I also don't want to think about it any more. This sucks. I'm selfish. I don't want to write one of these every week. 2016 isn't turning out like I'd expect.

| I promise there'll only be, like, only one 808 State song a month or so. This one I borrowed as a "Trek This Week" opening theme. It was originally only available on the Japanese remix disc "Forecast" which made it pretty easy for nobody to notice we were using it on public access television. I'm pretty sure I can tell you this now without getting sued.
