Too much nature tonight...this was on a front step as I put the garbage can on the curb. What is this huge thing and....is it molting?!

My insidious takeover of Fresh Air Radio is complete. Well, not COMPLETE, but I'm exhausted and don't think I can do much more. See you Saturday!

(Shared from Dollar Bin on KFAI)
Mixcloud does little "previews" when you hover over the play button on any particuar show - because this is the "I" show, you get a nice bit of me talking, some Billy Idol, some Imagination, me talking again, and... like, the PERFECT bit of INXS. So this time I'm saying, don't just immediately start playing the show - check out that preview BEFORE hitting "Play!" (Best part is one of the tracks that DIDN'T make the preview....you'll never see it coming and it may leave you speechless. Hey, is THAT clickbait-y enough to get you to listen?)

I'm on KFAI live RIGHT NOW with KFAI's MSP Sound! 90.3 or kfai dot org!
27.7.20 09:16
BONUS RADIO CRZ! Hey! Guess what? TONIGHT I'm guest hosting KFAI's MSP Sound presenting 120 minutes of local tunes! Back when going to shows was a thing, Krista Wax went to even more of them than I did - but we'd be at the SAME shows quite a bit! She's been in this time slot for exactly one year and I have a spreadsheet to prove it. Because there are no coincidences, the last person to broadcast this time slot was ALSO me as I wrapped up my After Midnight on KFAI mini-residency 54 weeks ago tonight! Here's an extremely rare shot of Krista and I during daylight hours when we both happened to be visiting "AM Drive" the same Friday morning. I'm on the left. (c. 31 May 2019, 📷: Barb Abney)

The prospect of another 10 hours of Pokémon GO in this soup we call weather fills me with ........ existential dread tinged with excitement? I mean, yeah, yellow is normally my favourite colour but it should NOT be yellow outside EVER. Anyway I did another two hours of radio with some help from eight requestors and a whole lotta new new music - if you like music and/or me at all, you might like THIS!

I won't lie - I've been playing Pokémon GO for about six hours straight, so who knows what'll happen when I try to put down the phone and be on the radio for two interrupted hours starting in 15 minutes! Like and follow KFAI Weekend on Demand for even more news (probably not about Pokémon)!
25.7.20 01:29
Ah yes, just the kind of fake friend request I would like at 1 in the morning on a lonely Saturday - thank you, "Cak-Mpink"
22.7.20 22:05
Well, this is a new wrinkle - instead of a totally nude nudes tumblr or request to visit some malware link, it's a FOREX trader! What is this, 2001? At least they chose "California City" as their hailing from - that one's ALSO a classic - well done, "Queen Quavo"
22.7.20 20:54
FOUR HOURS LATER
Both my thumbs have locked up and my forearms are cramping in a hurty way. I will apply a second Gatorade and maybe some plain cottage cheese. I believe I shall be in great pain soon. But I feel like a better neighbour?
22.7.20 16:42
BAD NEIGHBOUR ALERT: With all my lack of driving, I failed to notice that I...uh.... have REALLY let the alley jungle get out of hand. Hopefully I follow this up with a kickin' AFTER photo before darkness (if you love pulling weeds, come on over! Heh)
22.7.20 14:43 The cool breeze is blowing a certain way into my window and that way is the way where I also know my neighbor's drying laundry and how can I possibly still be awake while it's so cool and smells so great
22.7.20 13:02
Oh that reminds me, I got THIS request but they actually UNrequested me before I got to it! Maybe they figured out I wasn't a pretty lady? (Perhaps my masked profile picture is confusing the scammers)
22.7.20 13:00
Two widowers in a row - and what realistic names!
20.7.20 22:15 EXCITING LAWN UPDATE: Gonna take the risk and spread fertilizer tonight, which should either feed or finish off my lawn. (NB: "Spread fertilizer" is not the euphemism you think it is)
20.7.20 08:14
It's Monday now but maybe my show from Saturday can bring a little weekend back to ya! In two hours I included fifteen tracks from 2020 by artist from A to Zedd - A Certain Ratio, Booka Shade, The Chicks, De Lux, Double Grave, The Egyptian Lover, Einstürzende Neubauten, gusgus, HÆLOS, Jamie xx, Kiko King and creativemaze, Once and Future Band, Sorry, Youth Meets Jah Wobble AND Zedd, to be precise! I also played requests from Allison, Andy, LaLa, Lee, Mason and Tim! I also asked for money for KFAI a hundred times because it's SUMMER PLEDGE DRIVE! Check it out and let me know what you loved and what you hated!

It has been brought to our attention that last week; some of our staff members came into contact with the staff member of another bar, whom has since tested positive for Coronavirus. As a preventative measure we are going to close down while all staff members are tested.

At this time we have no reason to suspect that any staff or guests were exposed, but we won't know the extent of any potential exposure until we see the test results. After this round of testing is completed we will make an announcement for a reopening date, or if needed we will follow MN Dept of Health, and CDCs contact tracing protocols. We will post any new information as it comes in.

Please do what you can to stay safe, and look after one another. We are all in this together, and together we will make it through this.

(Shared from Mortimers) Hello everyone. Jasha here. We just got our initial round of test results back: Alex, Billy and Jakob- no detection. Me- Covid detected! I know, crazy right! It just got very real over here. I last bartended Sunday 3-8, bar-backed Friday 10pm- 2am and Thursday 4-8:30. I also bartended Wednesday 3-8. As all of you know who watch me work, I am an adamant hand washer and mask wearer. I don’t know if I contracted it at work or elsewhere and I hopefully did not spread it from work as I have worked under the assumption that it was always a possibility to have and was careful not to potentially spread it. We will contact everyone legible on the contact list and inform them (hopefully numbers and emails are legit). We will stay closed until we figure out a safe plan to move forward (hopefully sooner than later). I will work remotely until I am cleared by health professionals to come back. Until then, I will quarantine with Carrie, Levi and Rose and get to know my cats better. We will stay in touch and keep you posted. Thank you for all the support all of you have shown thus far and I look forward to seeing everyone as soon as I beat this thing. FYI I feel good physically with no symptoms and thanks again to the initial person that called in which lead to us getting tested. Please be careful
16.7.20 11:41
Most fake people who send me friend requests want me to visit their malware site and see their nonexistant nudes. This guy....well, I'm gonna guess scam. Although he has no real photos - or data at all - and he's hidden his Friends list - what STILL shows up is a "Followers" list almost entirely made up of people living in the Democratic Republic of Congo. So...I think I'll stay suspicious about good ol' Jim Ryan/Vinny Bukasa

15.7.20 12:02
I'm so happy to announce that I have passed the audition and have now been added to the KFAI schedule! My show is called "Weekend on Demand" - new new music and YOUR requests every Saturday from 5PM to 7PM (Central)! My stretch goal is to have the most interactive show on the station...well, maybe second most interactive after "AM Drive" - built largely around playing as many requests as I can. With any luck, I'll be able to find order amongst the chaos of throwing it wide open to anybody ambitious enough to ask me to play something on the air, with a renewed push towards stuff you're just not gonna hear on any other radio station in the Cities - or possibly the universe. Failing that, I'll just try to play the new Jamie xx 7" mix before anybody else does. Please feel free to find and follow/Like the show's new social presence @KFAIWeekend (here, Twitter, Insta) and engage with us any time the mood strikes you! If you can't tune in or stream live, shows will be available on demand for 14 days after broadcast - in fact, you can still hear my tryout/pilot shows from the 4th and the 11th! And I think they're really good! Doing live radio has been a dream of mine since I was a wee babe and I'm so excited to have the opportunity to present this show...and in these uncertain times, having something to look forward to and get excited about is a real life saver!
13.7.20 08:31
Hey I did radio Saturday and you can listen to it [again] RIGHT NOW! Included in these two hours are NEW NEW tracks from Yello, Disclosure, Hudson Mohawke & Tiga, Donny Benét, Chromeo, Clan of Xymox (don't miss the Clan of Xymox), Prince, John Carpenter, No Joy, And So I Watch You From Afar, South of Salem, Doves and James Blake! I also took requests from Mason, Andy, Ian, LaLa and my mom. We started with - of course - a loving tribute to 7-Eleven on 7/11.
11.7.20 21:03
It's a close tally, but I believe there may be more people on this cover no longer amongst the living than still left alive. Thanks, Closer Weekly!

Guys, I'm VERY proud of this show (once you get past the first minute of dead air) - if I counted correctly, I managed to debut NINE new tracks AND include FIFTEEN requests amongst the *28* tracks crammed into these two hours! A little something for everyone to enjoy - and also a little something for everyone to cringe at, probably. Also, I occasionally break up the music with talkin'. IT'S RADIO!! Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and contributions to help make this one possible!

Well, call me subtle and bring on the stubble. Here's a before and......to be continued. I just couldn't do it. Yet. I'm also trying to figure who I'm trying to look like NOW. I'm pleased so far with the parts of my face I've exposed, so there's that. Besides I'm now sure I could always be Rick Rubin by Christmas. Finally, I don't recommend you wear a black T when you shave off white hairs...
2.7.20 19:01 JUST IN: I will be putting on LIVE RADIO on the freshest of air (that is, KFAI) THIS Saturday, the 4th of July, from 3 to 5 PM CDT! I would LOVE to play YOUR request (so long as it suitable for air)! If you request it NOW, I will be WAY more likely to have it Saturday than if you call it in THEN! Offbeat, unusual, selections one usually does not hear on the radio will be greatly welcomed - although I can't speak for our listening audience, definitely by me! So GIMME BOTH BARRELS and then I hope you'll tune in to 90.3 or stream from KFAI dot org! Don't make me use any more exclamation points!

#tbt I heard you liked photos of me well here's a photo of me. What did I say about this five years ago?

"Another fine all yellow ensemble for #tbt, but this time not with a banana, but rather with a legal pad AND a box of Wheat Thins AND someone found a coat hanger for good measure. Peak yellow. Peak Zimmerman.

This looks to be in the political library at UCR which can only mean it was during our big Model UN weekend. (I actually know this because I found this photo in a big stack of OTHER Model UN photos, another of which you'll see on another Thursday...)"

Copied and pasted - thank you

Chicken pox is a virus. Lots of people have had it, and probably don't think about it much once the initial illness has passed. But it stays in your body and lives there forever, and maybe when you're older, you have debilitatingly painful outbreaks of shingles. You don't just get over this virus in a few weeks, never to have another health effect. We know this because it's been around for years, and has been studied medically for years.

Herpes is also a virus. And once someone has it, it stays in your body and lives there forever, and anytime they get a little run down or stressed-out they're going to have an outbreak. Maybe every time you have a big event coming up (school pictures, job interview, big date) you're going to get a cold sore. For the rest of your life. You don't just get over it in a few weeks. We know this because it's been around for years, and been studied medically for years.

HIV is a virus. It attacks the immune system, and makes the carrier far more vulnerable to other illnesses. It has a list of symptoms and negative health impacts that goes on and on. It was decades before viable treatments were developed that allowed people to live with a reasonable quality of life. Once you have it, it lives in your body forever and there is no cure. Over time, that takes a toll on the body, putting people living with HIV at greater risk for health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, diabetes, bone disease, liver disease, cognitive disorders, and some types of cancer. We know this because it has been around for years, and had been studied medically for years.

Now with COVID-19, we have a novel virus that spreads rapidly and easily. The full spectrum of symptoms and health effects is only just beginning to be cataloged, much less understood.
So far the symptoms may include:
Fever
Fatigue
Coughing
Pneumonia
Chills/Trembling
Acute respiratory distress
Lung damage (potentially permanent)
Loss of taste (a neurological symptom)
Sore throat
Headaches
Difficulty breathing
Mental confusion
Diarrhea
Nausea or vomiting
Loss of appetite
Strokes have also been reported in some people who have COVID-19 (even in the relatively young)
Swollen eyes
Blood clots
Seizures
Liver damage
Kidney damage
Rash
COVID toes (weird, right?)

People testing positive for COVID-19 have been documented to be sick even after 60 days. Many people are sick for weeks, get better, and then experience a rapid and sudden flare up and get sick all over again. A man in Seattle was hospitalized for 62 days, and while well enough to be released, still has a long road of recovery ahead of him. Not to mention a $1.1 million medical bill.

Then there is MIS-C. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children is a condition where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs. Children with MIS-C may have a fever and various symptoms, including abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes, or feeling extra tired. While rare, it has caused deaths.

This disease has not been around for years. It has basically been 6 months. No one knows yet the long-term health effects, or how it may present itself years down the road for people who have been exposed. We literally *do not know* what we do not know.

For those in our society who suggest that people being cautious are cowards, for people who refuse to take even the simplest of precautions to protect themselves and those around them, I want to ask, without hyperbole and in all sincerity:
How dare you?

How dare you risk the lives of others so cavalierly. How dare you decide for others that they should welcome exposure as "getting it over with", when literally no one knows who will be the lucky "mild symptoms" case, and who may fall ill and die. Because while we know that some people are more susceptible to suffering a more serious case, we also know that 20 and 30 year olds have died, marathon runners and fitness nuts have died, children and infants have died.

How dare you behave as though you know more than medical experts, when those same experts acknowledge that there is so much we don't yet know, but with what we DO know, are smart enough to be scared of how easily this is spread, and recommend baseline precautions such as:
Frequent hand-washing
Physical distancing
Reduced social/public contact or interaction
Mask wearing
Covering your cough or sneeze
Avoiding touching your face
Sanitizing frequently touched surfaces

The more things we can all do to mitigate our risk of exposure, the better off we all are, in my opinion. Not only does it flatten the curve and allow health care providers to maintain levels of service that aren't immediately and catastrophically overwhelmed; it also reduces unnecessary suffering and deaths, and buys time for the scientific community to study the virus in order to come to a more full understanding of the breadth of its impacts in both the short and long term.

I reject the notion that it's "just a virus" and we'll all get it eventually. What a careless, lazy, heartless stance.
