14.3.23 07:27 IT'S POO DAY
13.3.23 17:41
Here's a two hour taste of what I do on the air, featuring Nora, Mason's kid, Mason, Mason's kid and Mason's kid. (I think Fern liked my hair.) I also got to include new music from Metallica, Michael Bolton, Nation of Language, Róisín Murphy, Pardon the Interruption, Durand Jones and - how could I not - Shaquille O'Neal. Sprinkled throughout are twelve requests from KFAI listeners, some of the most musically literate tastemakers in the Twin Cities - and I'm not just saying that because I wanted their money. Because I also want yours! Fundraising info in comment number one!

A couple of times a year I ask you to open your hearts and your wallets in support of Fresh Air Community Radio. I've had the privilege to share new new music alongside your requests since July, 2020 but have been volunteering for KFAI going back at least seven years. My man currently in Studio 4, Lynval Jackson, just said on the air that he has been volunteering since the 1980s! Can you imagine? In 2023, radio is way less fun across the spectrum with only a precious few delivering a true local community experience for listeners. That kind of media needs to survive and thrive especially as the "big" players get ever more homogenized causing the underrepresented to get even more cynical that anybody out there will tell their stories. KFAI is committed to bringing those voices and perspectives to the forefront. They also let a middle-aged cishet white guy on every Saturday at 5 for a coupla hours, so it isn't ALL great... but sometimes it's pretty great.

You can help us out with a donation three ways!
1. Go visit kfai.org and smash that Donate button! Mention me or Weekend on Demand in the comment box so we know I guilted you!
2. Call 612 375 9030 (through Thursday, 3/23) and give your information to a waiting, willing live operator
3. For some reason, some of you just wanna go through Facebook to do this. Okay, fine, here's a Facebook fundraiser. Let me know if you'd like any gifts from us (OR, if you did this back in October and were expecting something that never came, please let me know that, too!)

Putting my money where my mouth is, I'll kick in an additional five bucks for EVERY donation of five or more that comes in on behalf of Weekend on Demand - that would double YOUR donation of five dollars if that's all you can do.

Friday news dump: While he's taking his first victory lap tonight, one thing you might take comfort from is the knowledge that in the original graphic, still available on Facebook if you know where to look, THREE shows were listed.

The free one at the casino tonight is the one still happening. Sadly, "The Turtle Will Surprise You."

The second one listed for Fargo never seemed to get announced and the venue wouldn't confirm or deny if it had ever had his show booked.

The third one listed for Sioux Falls WAS announced, but the venue was shortly thereafter removed from the "hosts" of the Facebook Event page and today when you click on the link to buy tickets, it takes you to a blank page. It appears to still exist as a Facebook Event merely for optics.

That would make the running total since the allegations two years ago 1 for 5 on shows actually happening, with previously announced gigs for PNA Hall ("rescheduled to a larger venue due to demand" but really silently disappeared) and Reggie's Bar in Chicago (silently disappeared) also not taking place.

Obviously 0 for 5 would be a better outcome, but at least nobody's paid a dime in ticket charges to see him perform yet.

Shows are no longer announced or even mentioned on Twitter - one could speculate that that's because it's harder to control the replies there.

It seems that Joady will keep trying to book gigs for him. I hope the money's worth it.

Let's not forget and let's continue to help venues who may not be unaware who they might be platforming as new shows are announced.

ROUNDY'S KITCHEN, A CONTINUING SERIES: At Dark Horse last night, Tamara turned the conversation towards my pantry by expressing her curiosity surrounding it, with an emphasis on exactly how many Rainbow items I bought umpteen years ago that may still be buried deep within my house waiting for me to take photos of and share with you in a Facebook post. Because there are no coincidences, I had an opportunity to put a pork butt roast (haha butt) in the crock pot 15 minutes ago for Wednesday (and Thursday, and probably Saturday) consumption, and with my usual recipe calling for a packet of Italian dressing seasoning - if there's any in the house - I explored the shelves under the kitchen island and wouldn't ya know, it turns out that not only did I still HAVE some Roundy's Italian dressing seasoning in the house, I still had THREE of the four envelopes - although its contents had hardened into a single large clump of flavour.....which is just fine when you're gonna diss!
olve it in a crock pot with the contents of a couple much newer jars of giardiniera (one "hot," one "mild") and half a giant jar of jalapeños for 15 or 16 hours anyway.

I did NOT look for a freshness date...maybe after we all sleep on it.

Golly I'm busy - hey did you NOT get carpetbombed by my semi-relentless self-promotion recently? You may somehow be unaware that I will be heading to Lowertown in a scant few hours to share some of my vinyl with a largely nonplussed crowd of drinkers, diners, pulltabbers and televised sports watchers and maybe YOU but also Very Special Guests ANDY'S FATHER AND MOTHER, so don't come for ME, come to meet THEM. Hover over that event link in comment numero uno for the nittiest of the gritty! What an absolutely gorgeous package from Rough Trade: the "Deep Sleep" edition of the new Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs LP "Land of Sleeper" comes with blue/black splatter vinyl, obi strip, foldout lyrics sheet/poster and, lest we forget, some really heavy heavy psyche rock. The UK batch is sold out but Rough Trade US still has a few of their 500 copies left if this is your kinda thing!
26.2.23 19:18
I never even told you three weeks ago about the hilarious gauntlet of Target personnel determined to not give me the sale price on this bag ($2.50 vs. $5.49, so you KNOW I had enough time to argue with everybody) but anyway here they are and here's my review.

The Frito-Lay company perfected the art of the barbecue flavoured chip with "Frito's Flavor Twists" so I already suspected I wouldn't like these as much as those. Their take on "BBQ" is THICK and insistent, which is great on a big chunky spiral of corn but on a crispy thin Dorito, it is WAY too much, especially when so much is applied that chips are no longer yellow. If you already like the Fritos, I'd suggest sticking to the Fritos.
26.2.23 03:54 Too lazy to do anything but tag Kirk

Lookit that wacky Bono making sure the Time LP is prominently displayed in the shot (from the trailer to the new documentary where Bono and The Edge meet David Letterman in Dublin or whatever)

I am now holding in my hot little hands the imported SEVENTEEN CD (17! Count 'em!) 40 year retrospecticus of the band IMAGINATION which hopefully includes every little thing they ever put out along with a few discs of stuff they never put out. Somewhere in here is LEEE JOHN's signature as well. "Excessive!" you say. "ESSENTIAL!" I say. Also I really wanted to spend my blizzard time, you know, ripping CD after CD on my 11 year old laptop, why not. Tagging the DJs who most need to know: Mason Simon Ron Chuck Jamez Tom Miguel and YOU probably, sorry I forgot to tag you, too.
21.2.23 16:39
Wahoo, I love owning Foam Giant (Flavor Crystals + The Telescopes (Official)) vinyl! OH SHIT I have to play in on my LASERDISC player?! The FTC will soon hear about this! (Just kidding, don't get mpls ltd in trouble)

My current Wordle curve. If I added correctly, I'm 389-2 but have missed the odd Friday or Saturday here and there so no cool giant streak number and also no idea how long it's been since I DID pull an X/6 (UPDATE: so I tweeted it at the time - good CRZ - it was July 8th, over seven months ago!) I play in "hard mode" which I think forces me to get it more quickly? I do give in and call up a "solver" page that offers me a list of words if I've spent too many minutes failing to come up with a legal guess because this shouldn't take THAT long for cryin' out loud. Still wondering if I'll ever manage a 1.
13.2.23 09:19
Ah, good ol' "City Tees" - Facebook ads may have a shelf life but they DO NOT CARE
12.2.23 02:48

Mason's DJing here and the MN Aurora Revontulet will be well-represented in the crowd! Still no idea which teams are playing, tho
11.2.23 15:04
I'm awake, I'm awake! Had a great time guest hosting "True Brit!" last night although I'm not sure the 37 minute "Stump Ron" segment came off as enjoyable for the listeners as it did for me and Ron :) I have a whole NOTHER two hours in me coming at 5PM CST including yet another WORLD* PREMIERE from SYM1 in the second hour and my own annoying tribute to Burt Bacharach in the first hour and the usual new new music and YOUR requests up until 7!

*again, please don't ever fact check my claims, but I'm pretty sure I get first KFAI spin this time around (Krista Wax and I have been taking turns - ooh, don't forget MSP Sound every Monday at 8PM!)
10.2.23 20:50
I have cracked one open! Strawberry was never a varietal I sought out even as a kid when we could still get any fruit flavour we wanted of stubby bottles of Stop'n'Shop Shortstop Pop that probably cost a dime plus deposit - wow, you forget how old I am sometimes. ANYWAY. Even the worst Pepper is better than most other sodas out there so I DID like this even if it's probably the lowest on the ol' Dr Pepper Zero Sugar totem pole by a good margin. If you like strawberry soda more then me, you'll probably go nuts for it. If you miss Diet Dr Pepper Berries & Cream, this is probably just that but in a different shade. I'm STILL convinced you could make this at the right Freestyle machine, which maybe enough people liked and clamored for this to exist? Nah. BRING BACK DARK BERRY or make with the grape, Dr!
10.2.23 17:00
Hey I forgot to tell you multiple times but if somehow you're spending a quiet evening at home I can make things a little louder at midnight CST (about seven hours from NOW) when I guest host "True Brit! Radio" on Fresh Air! We just might have a chance to Stump Ron and then I have almost entirely selections from the past six months to share with you. 90•3 on your radio / kfai•org or the KFAI Community Radio app on your Internet!
