Karyn_Sue's NSD Spring Clean Up Challenge

Post by Karyn_Sue »

I don't know about the rest of you - but my scrap room (sometimes referred to as a CRAP room since all the crap that doesn't have another "home" may find itself there, at least temporarily) - could use a good "spring cleaning" most any time of year!!!

Also, I am (like many of you I suppose) a paper hoarder. I once saw a scrapping shirt that read "I'm a scrap-a-holic. I need a 12x12 step program!" Yep, that's me!  And not only do I hoard my paper (yes, I still have some Basic Grey) I hoard my scraps - especially those from collections that I love and/or those that are big enough to lead me to think "I could use this someday"!  Well, someday just doesn't seem to come along as often as it should, LOL!!

During my latest purge - in anticipation of the swap box - I tried to go through my stuff more ruthlessly than ever - yet I still couldn't part with my collection of scraps. And so many of my scraps are really just strips of patterned paper of varying lengths and widths! So I challenged myself to make a layout using nothing but these strips.  And that's what my challenge is to you.  Create a layout using only scrap pattern paper strips- not a single new sheet of pattern paper should be "sacrificed" in the making of this layout!! In addition, your layout needs to be created on a sheet of plain cardstock - although you may do what you wish to it. You may also add anything in the way of embellies and even some additional plain cardstock (although that should also be scraps!)

So here is what I came up with - using white cardstock and only strips of pattern paper scraps from my myriad of Hanukkah collections that (as I've said before) all coordinate since they are all always the same shades of blue and yellow!!

Image

As you can see, I did mist and splatter the background (I KNOW!!!  Karyn got her paper WET!!! oh my!!!). I then created my menorah out of some silver Jewish star paper strips and the candles from assorted strips of patterned papers that I staggered and added some faux stitching to. The "flames" are likewise cut from scraps of yellow paper that I stickled. Then a single picture and a few scattered embellies and I love how it came out.

You DO NOT have to "create an object" out of your strips like I did (but feel free to do so, it was fun - and HINT: there may be sprinkles!) You may use your strips - as many or few as you wish - in creating your background.

If you want some other ideas about what else can be done with just strips - I've linked a couple more layout here. Note - these may have elements that would be ineligible for this challenge - for example the patterned paper background - but they are provided as inspiration:

inspiration 1 - paper weaving
inspiration 2 - larger strips
inspiration 3 - panel
inspiration 4 - matting

A winner will be selected at random to receive this beautiful "Just Because" collection AND tote bag! generously donated by Bella Blvd.

And, as always, the boring stuff:

1. All layouts must be submitted by Friday, 5/17 at 11:59pm EDT.
2. All layouts must use a sheet of plain cardstock as the background.
3. All layout design must be entirely of strips of scrap pattern paper.
4. If you have any questions, please pm me.
5. Most importantly - have fun & good luck!!!

I've got two totes filled with scraps so this should be easy for me! Your layout is stunning.

Love this challenge :I too am an inveterate hoarder of patterned paper scraps but they come in handy so often.
Now to find which scraps to sacrifice.  ;)

I need this challenge because I also have strips of paper for collage in my art journal along with scrapbooking.

Yes, I also suffer from PSHD -- Paper Scrap Hoarding Disorder! Love how you used your scraps to create the menorah!

My strips that are 12" x less than 1" live in a Pringles can, WHERE I CAN ALWAYS SEE THEM, and never get used.  I think I just like looking at them.

No problem! I have TONS of solid strips too but plenty of patterned to work with! Now, to think of an item to make it if I can!
