Using a gift certificate online

I received a gift certificate and would like to use it to place an online order. My order is for less than the gift certificate amount. On the order screen it shows an amount "overpaid" for the amount of the gift certificate I would have remaining. I will not lose that amount will I? Does it go as a credit on my account or do I then use the same code for a future order with what remains.

This is my first purchase received a promo gift cert for 35.00 it won't let me apply it to check out.  I am purchasing way over that amount, what do I do?
